History Repeats itself .. .

Nice Article ... read a part here ... link at the end ...

How long will SMS last? Will anything significantly different replace it? This article examines an old technology that is surprisingly similar to SMS. History does repeat.

Once upon a time, major service providers around the world introduced a short message service allowing people to send multiple messages to each other for a nominal fixed fee. Typically the message space was small, and as a result people invented methods to deal with this by cramming in as much information as possible using shorthand, acronyms and restricted grammar. It became very popular, creating upgrades to services infrastructure, and employing additional people, all despite the fact that people were already using the same service provider to communicate with each other using similar services. Sounds familiar?

So far this story could be about SMS, but in fact we are talking about the arrival of the humble postcard. The postcard was a major innovation of John P Charleton who patented the first private postcard in 1861 in Philadelphia, USA, and after 10 years it had been introduced in a number of countries around the world. Postcards became wildly popular in ways and for reasons that are strangely similar to SMS and MMS based services. In fact, the more you dig into postcard history the more you can see how postcard services had a very similar extended marketing mix to contemporary mobile phone messaging services.

Most people believe all products have a lifecycle and postcards haven't been immune from this. Studying history might help answer what is the lifecycle of SMS or MMS.

By the early 1900's postcards were enjoying a golden age of popularity. Around this time, the camera had been invented, mass picture printing had improved and all of this saw the introduction of picture postcards which only added to the popularity of postcards. The first "MMS" became available! More interestingly, cameras became cheap enough to allow people to begin manufacturing their own picture postcards creating the opportunity for people to send the equivalent of MMS messages, and the service providers enjoyed increased income from carrying these special postcards, which allowed for more complex multimedia messages to be sent. The "camera phone" had been invented.

To do or Not to do ?? NOT TO DO ….

Valentine Day & Blood DonationInteresting Combinations …

The last time I donated blood ( October 27th 2004 ) was also the first time I donated blood. The experience was really a nice one. The satisfaction of doing something good was real and worth the effort.

You can read my
blogpost I posted after my first blood donation … it not only talked about my feeling but also about Blood Donation

I am currently at the Headquarters of WHO (Geneva, Switzerland) – The World Health Organization … for a long term project … It was in WHO that a Blood Donation Drive was organised today … on V Day J

With great hope, I joined the Queue of donors and stood there for over 90 minutes along with my friend to donate blood. We had to fill up some form, get our hemoglobin checked and also a consultation with a doctor before actual donation. When my turn arrived to meet the doctor, in the various questions, came the discovery of the fact that India is considered to be a Malaria prone country so I have to wait for atleast 6 months after an India visit before I become eligible for a blood donation. I asked her, what would happen if I visited my home (India) at any point in time … the doctor said the the time of 6 months will restart from the date of return … ALAS … I have been here in Geneva for less than 3 months now and so I was refused participation in the donation drive …

wish I cud donate …

I would personally encourage you all to Go Ahead and Just Do It … it’s a great deed and the satisfaction achieved is Real …

Change - The only Constant !!

Change ... sometimes desired ... sometimes desirable ...

Most of the time avoided and ignored ...

But there will always be some people who are not comfortable with the CONSTANT nature ... rather their interest lies in the CONSTANT Nature of Change ...

Must be sounding Interesting ... and philosophical ... coming straight from a Change Mgmt. Consultant ...... But hey ... why am I talking of change ... all of a sudden .... ??

Well ... My Blog has undergone some massive changes in terms of content and content organization .... the ShoutBox has been added in side bar ... also a summary of posts posted by Shubham on Arbit ... A Quote a day Quate to Quote ... new section added ...

I am a klind of person, who likes 'change' more often ... otherwise life becomes monotonous .... ambiguity offers more imagination ... change shakes up our dormant lives and brings some action on it ....

enZoy Changing :-))

Happy Valentines Day to all in the wide whole world ... across the World Wide Web ...

Valentine Day and Me … Who ME ??

Well … to put things in perspective … before you read this post … you will have to go back to my previous post … bcoz this is but a continuation of the same (at least read the last 2 para for continuity sake :-)

I was talking about getting Nostalgic after reading the title ‘To Do Or Not To Do ... What To Do …’ … the title has a special significance and the significance is attached to the event which occurred on a special date ….

And guess whatits about February 14th ( Valentine’s Day )…
And guess whatIts not about Love nor about a girl friend …

its about something else altogether …. Its about M&A … nope … not about Mergers and Acquisitions … but very much about MastisK and Arbit … and Me … and the two other significant others who had much to contribute to the greatest M&A in my life … :-)) … Nikhil (Baba) and Shubham (Jackal)

The Valentine Day had no great significance for me until 2004 … (that’s what everybody thought and I portrayed … but it was otherwise .. it’s a guarded secret and lets keep it that way …) … the V day of 2004 brought someone into my life who not only greatly influenced me and my thought processes but also re-introduced me to the infinite potential locked inside me … which I was literally forgetting … the passion inside me which was slowly diminishing in warmth and flame …

No no no … I did not meet a fairy or a lovely lady who changed my life forever and introduced me to the uncharted terrains of love and all that … as I said earlier … this V Day is significant for me but NOT from that angle … let me get to the story straight …

February 14th 2004 – For the first time, I teamed up with Nikhil and Shubham.

That was my first encounter with both of them. The encounter was a very enZoyable one. With the least amount of preparation and with the least amount of seriousness (whats that??) we came up with a supposed-to-be hilarious short skit for the V Day celebrations in our campus… (u can read more about it on shubham’s blogpost)

But the day and the event marked the formation of a small team with big potential. A team that has been inseparable ever since… the physical distances have increased greatly with Nikhil and Shubham in different parts of India and me in Switzerland … but the connectivity is still the same … We resonate and discuss as often as we can … with several mails shooting across our mailboxes to each other discussing various initiatives we have made, we plan to make and we dream of making ….

Since our V Day encounter with each other … we have worked on many diverse initiatives ... some that hit the bulls-eye and some hit the bull in the eye ... But the results of our efforts have never dented our friendship… there have been the usual ups and downs … differences of opinions and all kinds of things … but they all have just added to the strength and fiber of our friendship …

Nikhil sounded with me the concept of Online Mgmt Event … it seemed interesting … I had no idea what I would do … but felt that even a moral support from my end would be of some value and so I gave my full support to Nikhil … Both of us , along with a team of some great friends and batch-mates … created MastishK … India’s First Fully and Truly Online Management Games Event … it was a landmark decision on my part … because … the whole episode uncovered the hidden potential and awakened the sleeping giant within me … What started as a Moral support slowly and gradually took over me and I was completely consumed by the MastishK fever. MastishK was on my mind 24 by 7 for the entire quarter till its stupendously successful completion.

Today .. when I look back at MastishK 2004 … sometimes it really sets me thinking .. was it indeed I who played a significant role in the creation of a milestone in history … was it really me ??

Credit goes first to Nikhil for involving me and also to all the other great friends, who were there with me all the while, supporting and encouraging me.

Quite about the same time, along with the big M, even the small A was born. We came up with an idea of introducing an MBA Comic Character and thus began a new phase of journey with Shubham. We developed Arbit together … along with inputs from Nikhil and our entire group.

Although, officially, there are only 2 Arbit Creators, there is an un-official third one too .. Nikhil, who ahs always been aprt of our discussions and decisions on Arbit … and many others who have given some inputs for Arbit…

Working with Shubham on Arbit has been altogether an interesting eperience by itself ..

All three of us have worked together closely for Mastishk, for Arbit, and on many other things and concepts … I found two wonderful friends …

And yes … you must be wondering how on earth did the title of my last blog post make me nostalgic about all this … well the fact of the matter is that …

The title of the stupid play / skit which we performed on the V Daythe day it all began … was … To Do Or Not To Do – What To Do ??

Well .. I guess remember that I have to maintain some balance in life .. and I shud now move on from my blog to other priorities in my life ... after all ... V Day is coming (in about a couple of minutes) … :-)

To Do Or Not To Do ... What To Do …

I am being torn … pulled in several directions …
all of them close to me and all of them significant and important …

I am torn between the various demands of my life ...

Professional life as well as Personal life and yes ... also to add to that … My Life ...

Professional life has brought me away from my friends and family ..
Away from my Personal Life … right now, life is seriously unbalanced

I am away from home ... hundreds of thousands of miles away ...
Pulled away from the warm surroundings of homely India to the cold Alps of Switzerland ...

It’s the professional life that has brought me here and it is demanding a lot of my time and attention ...

Consulting has its own challenges ...
Change Mgmt. Consulting takes it several levels higher ...

Caught in this professional demand (and the Personal Life already unbalanced), I have not been unable to spend time with ME too ...

Yes… I have neglected and ignored my dreams, my aspirations, my biz plans… even my brain'child Arbit ....

Yes I have given them time but not as much as I would like to do ...

Yes, I have been working regularly on Arbit ... but that’s not satisfying ...
I want to do much more for Arbit .... much much more than what I am doing NOW ...
A lot needs to be done in various aspects of Arbit ... from new characters to makeovers of old ones ... from working on website content to looking into improvement areas of the comic strips quality ...

I have not been able to record or even document my biz plans ...
which keep zooming across the gray matter inside my head ...
ideas in which I have complete faith, belief and confidence ..
Ideas which belong to my close friends who share the same entrepreneurial zeal with me
and I have faith and confidence in them ... I have not been able to give them my time ...

I have not paid any attention to my blog .... it has stagnated for about a year now ...
I did post something in between ... they were my feeble attempts to get back at blogging ...
not very successful I would say .... but this time around .. I will be paying more attention ... and I guess this post and the others in the last few days are proof enough of my determination to be back on the blogger’s park ….

I have not paid any attention to my very own site ..
Yes ... www.shoOOonya.com has been seeking my attention for quite some time now ...
God only knows when will I do some justice to myself and my site ... my e-existence ...

The project here has its fair share of challenges and I am enzoying every moment of it ...
But there is an imbalance in my life right now .... profession / career is taking up all my time ..

Need to strike a balance ... need to work consciously towards it ...

Hope I am able to do some justice to me and myself and my dreams and aspirations ...

Hope and luck ... both will take me through this organised chaos in my life ...

Well … I had planned to close this blog post here … but when I saved this file temporarily on my desktop and when I started thinking of a title for this blog post … an apt title did strike … To Do Or Not To Do ... What To Do … but at the same time it awakened some old memories … made me feel nostalgic …

so my next post is going to be about this nostalgia which struck me ….

Google before Gargle

Yes ... thats what is happening in my life ... AGAIN ...

Google before Gargle

I am back to those times when I was in NITIE ... forever logged on to the campus Network ... my desktop computer (nick named as C Cube or C3 or simply Dabba) was ON ... 24 by 7 ... I guess the dabba was switched Off .. or more precisely Shut Down about 8 to 10 times in the span of 12 to 15 months it spent in NITIE ...

I was forever logged on ... onto the netwrok and onto the Net ... Google was the home page and GMail became the default email service ... those were the days when early in the morning (or even late in the morning after sleeping in the early hours of morning after late night loooooong discussions) I used to get up ... open my eyes and google before even going to the washroom or brushing my teeth ....

Those were the days of google before gargle ...

After a break of almost a year .... I am back to the same old days ... I am now in Switzerland .. away from home ... living in a single room ... just like NITIE days ... Now I am also connected to broadband service and have a laptop (nicknamed as Dollops ... officially named as SilverSnow) at home ....

last few days ... I have observed myself sliding back to the 'google before gargle' habit ... in early childhood, mom used to say ... Get up early in the morning and study, the mind is fresh and so it is the best time to study .... I very much believe it ... up early and google / gmail and do the best and most important and creative things in early morning ...

well .. it is nice to be back on a creative high .. withmy Dollops and the net connection ... I am able to connect to my friends Baba and Jackal again on real time basis and this week marks the beginning of a new idea in our MastishK (Hindi / Sanskrit for the Mind) ...

Welcome back ... to myself in the creative space ...

well .. if you are wondering what is the creative idea we are working on .. let me tell you that it is nothing big or great .. its just personal ... between the three of us ... and our lives ... putting it in perspective ... and having an outside view of it ... a bit of introspection ...

bye for now ... got to work on Arbit and its Valentine Day special ...

see ya in the next post ... sooon to come ... after all ... V Day is coming ...

shoOOonya - The Concept !!

The Concept behind shoOOonya

Many people have often wondered, some even asked me …

What the hell is the meaning behind having a name and an identity like …shoOOonya…

Why on earth something like zero … and that too with a weird spelling structure and the numerous dots around it and the mixture of small and capital alphabets ….

Let me tell you the funda behind " ... shoOOonya ... "

the ellipses ... the double double 'O' … the small and the capital 'o' ...

... shoOOonya ... zero ... nothingness ...

The universe started with a Big Bang ...before the BB there was 'nothing' ... and before that ... infinity ...we have absolutely no idea how long this nothingness lasted ...this unknown period is represented by the ellipses at the beginning …the small 'o' represents the Big Bang... the beginning of the universe as we live in ...

It is theoretically said that this world will end in another Big bang ...a reverse one this time where everything will compress into a point … And kind of disappear ...
the other small 'o' represents this one...

And the ellipses that follow the name represent the unknown emptiness / nothingness that will follow ...

Coming to the capitals 'O's ... they represent the World we live in ....the symbolic earth and the symbolic universe ... and EVERYTHING contained within ....the universe cud b taken as the solar system or the milky way galaxy or ....the whole of universe which is considered to be a circular expending/contracting entity

Not only the Big bang theory ...but also our Indian Hindu Mythology talks about similar concepts ....about the birth , life, maturity, transformation and finally death… and the ensuing silence of the universe ...

well .. so you see ... the ...shoOOonya... is that complexity put into a nutshell ...

and yes ... why look outside ... consider us human beings ,,,,our life and its progress .... the things happening before birth (the ellipses) ..and then starting from the tiny cell and the 'egg' and then birth ... (the small 'o')the stages of life dependant and the independent (the capital 'O's) ...finally death (the small 'o') ... and the legacy and memories left behind .. the end ellipses ...

whew .... quite a lot squeezed into one name and its specific representation

" ... shoOOonya ... "

I know I have been missing from the blogosphere for almost a year now … a year which had many milestones and significant events for me …

With this post about concept behind shoOOonya … I make a comeback to the blog circuit…

Welcome Back … to myself …

. . .shoOOonya ...
