Habit

I am your constant companion.
I am your greatest asset or heaviest burden.
I will push you up to success or down to disappointment.
I am at your command.
Half the things you do might just as well be turned over to me,
For I can do them quickly, correctly, and profitably.
I am easily managed, just be firm with me.
Those who are great, I have made great.
Those who are failures, I have made failures.
I am not a machine, though I work with the precision of a
machine and the intelligence of a person.
You can run me for profit, or you can run me for ruin.
Show me how you want it done. Educate me. Train me.
Lead me. Reward me.
And I will then...do it automatically.
I am your servant.
Who am I?
I am a habit.

The author of the above is unknown, but the words are right on target. If you make good habits, they in turn will make you.

But like the weeds in the garden, bad habits can take over your life. Make a decision today to pull those weeds.

I got the above in an email from simpletruths.com ... liked it so thought of sharing it further with you all ...

Walking on Water !

A few days ago, over the weekend, i went to Jumeirah ... Jumeirah Hotel, Burj Al Arab Hotel and a small beach.

Saw around, clicked a few snaps and went to the beach ...

Stoood there watching the vast expanse of blue-green waters ... it was nice ...

the small waves .. the splashing ... the sound fo the sea ... serene ...

After a few minutes ... there was an urge to go nearer to the water ... to step in it ...

I was dressed in jeans and a heavy pair of shoes with my laptop bag on my shoulder (without the laptop of course - it had water and some snacks) ... not the dress code for a beach u see ..

But the thought had struck and so the jeans were folded and brought to the knee level .. the large shoes removed, a suitable plastic bag found and hung onto my bag ... and i was ready to go ...

For a few moments i simply walked on the dry sand and then eventually on the wet sand ... the feeling was GREAT ! and then suddenly a small wave touched my feet and i received a 'coool shock' of water at the soles of my feet ...

The cool water touched my sole and serene feeling rushed through my soul ...

I am nto very goood at words, in fact, i am not any good with words so i cant describe the feelings i had for the next 2 hours while i walked in water ... sometime a few centimeters and sometimes knee deep ... and at a time a wave drenched me entirely waist down ....

i ran to the shore and emptied my pockets ... the 2 mobile phones, the digi cam, purse etc etc ...

I realised i hadnt walked on sea water for about 2 years now ..
And when was the last time i really enzoyed the sea water under my feet ...
well ... i dont even remember .. must have been when i was a tiny kid who didnt care about a thing in the world ...

Those two hours were the most peaceful, beautiful and serene moments of my recent life ... a life which has seen a ot of emotional roller coaster turmoil off late ...

And yes ... All the while i was missing something ... i mean .. someone ..

I was missing the company of a special someone … someone with whom i could share these special serene moments ...

wish the one was there with me ...

I was in Mumbai during those times and it was unnerving ... thinking about family, friends and relatives who were out there in the nearby areas ...

I just wish such incidents dont happen again ...

Children's Day and Happy Birthday to Me !

I never knew this :)

That my birthday actually falls on the (International) Children's Day !!

Universally, Children's Day is celebrated on 20th November, every year. This date was chosen as a day to celebrate childhood.

The date 20th November, was chosen as it marks the anniversary of the day in 1959, when the Declaration of the Rights of the Child was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly adopted. In 1989 the Convention on the Rights of the Child was signed on the same date, which has been sanctioned by 191 states, ever since.

However, while 20th November is universally celebrated as Children's Day, in India this day has been preponed to 14th November, the date the marks the birth anniversary of independent India's first Prime Minister – Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

So, all my life i always thought how close i was born to the Children's day without realising that i was infact born ON the Children's day itself !! COOOL !!

And to think of it ... every country chooses its own Children's Day ... so with enough number of countries and luck ... we might have Children's Day all year round !!

Quintessentialities of the 90s in India

A great compilation of the quintessentialities of the 90s in India ....
(( -- I loved it ... though of course i did not complie it ... Got it as a forward in my mailbox !!!  ))
1) You know the words to 'In-pin-safety-pin' and 'akkad-bakkad' by heart

2) Cricket is almost a religion for you, and you idolize at least one of Kapil Dev/Rahul Dravid/Sachin Tendulkar/Saurav Ganguly

3) You have read at least some Chacha Chaudhary or Tinkle comics

4) You've watched Shaktimaan on TV at least once in your life. And you can immediately recognize the character when you see him.

6) You couldn't wait for it to be December so you could have the Toblerone chocolates your NRI relatives brought you

7) You watched Cartoon Network, and then the late night movies on TNT that came after Cartoon Network ended.

9) You were THRILLED when McDonald's opened in your neighborhood (or even eight kilometers away)

10) Your first burgers were at Wimpy's or Nirula's.

11) A visit to Pizza Hut used to mean a special treat

12) You have seen Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun at least 5 times each

13) You still remember the theme song to Hum Paanch.

14) You have played hours upon hour of Pukdam-pakdai, oonch-neech, kho-kho, 'Doctor, doctor, help us!', 'Lock and key'

15) You have played 'Uma Joshi' more times than you can remember.

16) Dog 'in' the bone was your favorite co-ed game.

17) Much of your free time in school was spent playing UNO.

18) You collected trump cards of wrestlers, cricketers, and airplanes, and did not quite understand why your younger siblings were obsessed with Pokemon and the other Japanese trends that followed.

19) Your summer vacations were often synonymous with visiting your grandparents

20) Your parents, at some point, told you 'Dark Room' was a bad game to play. But you still loved playing it.

21) Bole mere lips, I love uncle Chips!

22) You know the song 'Made in India' by Alisha Chinoi

23) You have seen many many many episodes of 'Antakshri' on Zee TV and know the only thing constant in the show is Anu Kapoor.

24) Amy evenings have been spent watching little kids gyrate vulgarly on Boogie Woogie on Sony.

25) You were the coolest thing in class if you had a computer in your house while it was still the 90s.

26) You learnt LOGO in school!

27) You couldn't wait to start 4th/6th standard so you could start writing with PENS instead of with pencils!

28) You often you terms and phrases like 'kutti', 'abba', 'same to you, back to you, with no returns', and 'shame shame, puppy shame, all the donkeys know your name.'

29) You most probably saw Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge at the cinema at least once. You also fantasized singing songs in mustard fields like in the movie.

30) You have seen David Dhawan and Govinda movies and laughed at them.

31) You have said 'haw' or 'haw ji ki pwji' when you saw people kissing in English movies

34) You remember the Gujarat earthquake very clearly and could possibly tell everyone EXACTLY what you were doing when the earthquake occurred.

35) Barbies for girls, and GI Joes for boys were the ultimate status symbols. You just wanted more more more and more. And how can I forget Hot Wheels, for both boys and girls?

36) You have worn Osh-Kosh B'gosh and United Colours of Benetton clothes while growing up. And you thought 'imported' clothes were definitely way better than 'made in India' clothes (never mind that a lot of clothes brought from overseas by NRI relatives were actually made in India, before 'Made in China' started appearing on EVERY existing thing)

37) You know the words to 'Posham Paa', and like it better than 'Oranges and Lemons' even though you'd sing the latter to sound cool (see 32 above).

38) At some point or other, cool was your favourite, and therefore, most overused word.

39) Captain Planet was your first introduction to environmental consciousness.

40) You have tried to convince people around you to not burst crackers on Diwali, and then gone straight back home and burst them yourself.

41) You have had endless packets of Parle Gluco G biscuits, and of Brittania Little Hearts biscuits.

42) You loved licking off the cream from the centre of Bourbon biscuits.

43) There were no Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Puma- Bata and Liberty was the way to go for your sports shoes.

44) You have probably consumed more Frooti in your lifetime than there is oil in Iraq.

45) You watched Baywatch on Star World even though (or because) your parents said you shouldn't watch it.

46) You bought packets of potato chips for the specific purpose of collecting Tazos. And you had Tazos depicting everyone from Confucius to Daffy Duck to Daffy Duck dressed as Confucius.

47) For the longest time, the Maruti 800, the Premier Padmini, THE Fiat, and THE Ambassador were the only cars you saw on the road, and the Contessa was cool because it was bigger.

48) You would literally jump up in excitement if you ever chanced upon an imported car (Oh my gosh, is that really a MERCEDES?)!

49) You spent a good part of 1998 drooling over the Hyundai Santro and the Daewoo Matiz , debating which one was better.

50) You used to Fuzen gum. You also chewed Big (big) Babool and/or Boom Boom Boomer chewing gum. They were bright pink and disgusting tasting, but you loved them for the temporary tattoos.

51) Talking of temporary tattoos, you sometimes had contests with your classmates about who had more tattoos on their arm, leg, knee, hand, forehead, wherever.

52) You thought Mario and Tetris were the coolest things ever invented, especially if you were a boy.

53) You knew that having the latest Hero or Atlas bicycle would make you the coolest kid on the block.

54) You can imitate Sushmita Sen's winning gasp to perfection.

55) You have, at some point of time, worn GAP clothes (real or fake) like SRK in KKHH.

56) Seemingly senseless acronyms like SRK, DDLJ, KKHH actually make sense to you.

57) You have at some point debated who was more beautiful- Aishwarya or Sushmita.

58) If you lived in Delhi, you went bowling at Essex Farms, or Go-Karting at 32nd Milestone and couldn't think how you could get any cooler than that.

59) Baskin Robbins ice-cream was THE thing to have!

60) You know what Campa Cola is. And you also knew that Coca Cola was THE drink.

61) When you would watch WWF keenly every evening/afternoon and really think that Undertaker had 7 lives and he made an "actual" appearance in the Akshay Kumar- starrer Khiladiyon ka Khiladi.

62) When all backpacks (or 'schoolbags') and water bottles and tiffin boxes had strange cartoon characters that were hybrid versions of seven or eight different characters, and you still bought them, because a green man wih a water pistol, boots, a jet-pack, Johnny bravo hair, a rajasthani mustache, gloves, and underwear (long johns) over his pants, called 'Mr. X' was OBVIOUSLY a status symbol.

63) You remember the Nirma tikia jingle.

64) You remember the Nirma girl.

65) You remember the 'doodh doodh' ad and also the 'roz khao andey' ads.

66) You grew up reading, if you read at all, some or all of Nancy Drews, Enid Blyton books, Hardy Boys, Babysitters Club, Animorphs, Goosebumps, Sweet Valley series, Judy Blumes, and Tintin, or Archie comics. Because naturally, reading foreign authors made you much cooler than reading Tinkle.

67) Towards the late 90s (1998-99) at least some of us started our Harry Potter obsessions!

68) You absolutely HAD to go to Essel World if you wnet to Mumbai! "Essel World mein rahoonga main, ghar nahin nahin jaaonga main!"

69) You watched the Bournvita Quiz contest on TV pretty religiously. The smarter ones amongst you actually took part in it and had your entire school and your entire extended families watch you on it!

70) "Jungle jungle baat chali hai, pata chala hai. Chaddi pehen ke phool khila hai, phool khila!"

71) Maggi 2 Minute Noodles = ultimate snack (and tiffin, lunch, dinner)!

72) If you grew up in the early 90s, you recall the nation's obsession with Mahabharata on TV

73) In the later 90s, you religiously followed Hip Hip Hooray on Zee. Maybe Just Mohabbat on Sony too.

74) You eagerly awaited Friendship Day, so you could give friendship bands to all your friends, and get bands from them in return. Then, of course, those with the most bands loved to show them off (and on Rakhi, boys with the most Rakhis loved showing those off too!)

75) This list made you smile.

Obama's tribute to Gandhi in Victory Speech

Obama's tribute to Gandhi in Victory Speech

Barack Obama, who scripted history by getting elected as the first black President of the United States, has always seen Mahatma Gandhi as an inspiration who reminds him about the 'real message of life'.

"Through the power of his example and his own unshakable spirit, Gandhi inspired a people to resist oppression, sparking a revolution that freed a nation from colonial rule," the Democratic Presidential-elect had said.

"Gandhi's significance is universal. Countless people around the world have been touched by his spirit and example. His victory in turn inspired a generation of young Americans to peacefully wipe out a system of overt oppression that had endured for a century. And more recently led to velvet revolutions in Eastern Europe and extinguished apartheild in South Africa," the 47-year-old Senator from Illinois had said in his message on October 2, the birth anniversary of Gandhi.

What lies ahead ... for Obama !

The US Presidential election results are out. OBAMA is the new President. What a Win ! The first ever Black President of USA. blah blah blah (You have already read it all)

Now comes the hard part !!

In 77 days, President Bush will return to Texas, leaving Mr. Obama in charge of two wars, a $700 billion bailout fund, a $10 trillion debt, an annual deficit inching toward $1 trillion and a stock market that has wiped out trillions in retirement savings. That's not to mention Medicare and Social Security trust funds sliding toward insolvency, an increase in joblessness and a faltering U.S. image abroad.

The joke making the rounds in Washington is that after polls closed, the winner was sure to demand a recount.

Chopping their damn legs off ....

There was a large telephonic company in the Midwest. After Korean war they developed a great program for training supervisors of telephonic operators. Graduates of the program were absolutely top-notch and the program was awarded many commendations, written up in magazines & studies by other organizations.

But there was a problem. The graduates were so good dat as soon as a class graduated, most of them were contracted by other companies & hired away. There was a very high demand for these graduates as they were having excellent communication skills.
The telephone company tried everything to keep its graduates - it gave them more money & fancy titles, it erected an  "Honour Wall", it send their spouses flowers on every anniversary etc etc.

The other companies simply gave them more money & even fancier titles !
As u can imagine the head of the telephone company had many meetings to figure out ways to keep graduates from leaving. In one of these meeting, so the story goes, one of the manager lost his temper & shouted: "I'd like to chop their damn legs off - then they couldn't leave."

Everybody laughed. Except one person who said" "Yes of course, that's it."

"Whats it?" said his boss.

"We il hire only handicapped people in wheelchairs for the program. We;ll redo all our entrance ways, our elevators, our toilets. We'll work with doctors and physical therapists to develop exercise programs. We'ill  ... "

And that's wat the did. And other companies no longer tried to hire graduates away because they knew they had to redo all their entrance, elevators, toilets and so on.

And it is started because somebody suggested chopping "their damn legs off" - a very illogical solution.
That's Lateral Thinking !

Worse than Divorce ...

In the recent tumble down of the stock markets where people lost loads of valuation (read 'money') ...

a Trader commented ...

"This is worse than a divorce. I've lost half my net worth and I still have a wife."

(Caught this on the status message of a friend, Karan Sadhwani)

Optimism !!

The glass is not only half filled but there is nice refreshing fruit juice in it !!

Dont you think that is taking optimism just a tad bit too far ??

Perils of Consulting in Festive Season !

When I got into Consulting ... friends said "Cool ! Now you will be travelling places !"

Well .. I did travel ... 14 months in Geneva, Switzerland - 6 months in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - now in Dubai, UAE ....

BUT

Ever since 2005 ... I have been away from Home ... during Diwali and also during my Birthday ...
Fate invariably ensures that i am away from home, from family, from friends on these two very important occasions ...

Diwali is a festival where the entire family gets to come together ... its the festival of lights, joy, togetherness, lots of home made sweets, meeting relatives and friends, wishing everybody prosperity and happiness .... and so much more .... AND ... I end up ebing away from home !

My Birthday is a day when i am supposed to be at the centre ... wish wishes, emails, ecards, phone calls, gifts, party all flowing towards me from friends and family ... AND ... I end up being away from home ...

It all started in 2005 when i went to Swiss just before Diwali ... in fact i did return after a week only to see Mumbai celebrating Diwali from 22,000 feet above sea level ... and then just before my Birthday I had top fly off to swiss again on a long term assignment.

In 2006, I was in swiss .. during Diwali and my B'day ... no chance of coming to India for that ... Although I enjoyed both out there ... Indian Association of geneva (IAG) made my Diwlai fantastic and a few good friends (Pankaj & family and Shruti and sister) made my birthday memorable !

in 2007, I was in Malaysia with my wife .. I cheated fate and flew down to Mumbai on Diwali day with my wife and surprised my entire family. From the airport before taking off, we even called up home adn talked to mom-dad cribbing about the fact that my job was keeping me away from family on festive occasions. :) Birthday was once again away from home, in Malaysia, BUT i was not alone. My wife was with me adn we had a good time celebrating my Birthday at a nice height with a fantastic view at KL Tower !!

In 2008 ... the worst years of all ... I had to fly down to Dubai on a project just before Diwali (infact .. literally on teh first day of Diwali) and i will be returning home after a month ... just after my Birthday !! Cruel are the designs of Fate when their mood is in a wierd sense of humour !!

So here I am .. cribbing about myself being away from home in festive season ...

What about next year ... i dunno !! I just hope I am with my family on both occasions !!

if it does not happen ... I might just make it happen !!

Happy Diwali !! Happy New Year !!
Wish you a very happy diwali and a prosperoud new year ahead ....

Questions in Life !!

"Alchohol may not be the answer for all your questions !" - Swami Vivekananda

... to which a friend of mine added ...

"But it sure helps you forget the questions :)" - Vasantha Sapalinga

(BTW ... NO .. I do not believe nor subscribe to the thoughts above. I
am fine with the questions in my life and do not feel the need to
'forget' them using alchohol :)

Left Right Left ...

The following quote is relation to the recent Economic / Financial Bubble Burst ..

There are two sides to a Balance Sheet - Left & the Right ( Liabilities and Assets respectively).
On the Left side there is nothing right.. and on the right side there is nothing left.

Understanding the Financial Bubble !

I have never been a good student of Finance ... not even Economics. So all this talk of financial bubble, Lehman Brothers Bankruptcy etc was Latin and Green for me ...

I came across an interesting blog post by Great Bong wherein a simple (yet complex for me) explanation has been attempted.

Also, my best friend took some pity on my 'poor' state of mind (economically speaking) and sent me an even simpler version of the story which she received as a forward from someone who received it as a forward and so on ... I reproduce here that simple explanation ... and if the author happens to see this .. kindly write to me so that i can give the credit where it is due :)

-----------------------------------------------------

Once there was a little island country. The land of this country was the tiny island itself. The total money in circulation was 2 dollars as there were only two pieces of 1 dollar coins circulating around.

1) There were 3 citizens living on this island country.  A owned the land. B and C each owned 1 dollar.

2) B decided to purchase the land from A for 1 dollar. So, now A and C own 1 dollar each while B owned a piece of land that is worth 1 dollar.

* The net asset of the country now = 3 dollars.

3) Now C thought that since there is only one piece of land in the country, and land is non producible asset, its value must definitely go up. So, he borrowed 1 dollar from A, and together with his own 1 dollar, he bought the land from B for 2 dollars.

*A has a loan to C of 1 dollar, so his net asset is 1 dollar.
* B sold his land and got 2 dollars, so his net asset is 2 dollars.
* C owned the piece of land worth 2 dollars but with his 1 dollar debt to A, his net residual asset is 1 dollar.
* Thus, the net asset of the country = 4 dollars.

4) A saw that the land he once owned has risen in value. He regretted having sold it. Luckily, he has a 1 dollar loan to C. He then borrowed 2 dollars from B and acquired the land back from C for 3 dollars. The payment is by 2 dollars cash (which he borrowed) and cancellation of the 1 dollar loan to C. As a result, A now owned a piece of land that is worth 3 dollars. But since he owed B 2 dollars, his net asset is 1 dollar.

* B loaned 2 dollars to A. So his net asset is 2 dollars.
* C now has the 2 coins. His net asset is also 2 dollars.
* The net asset of the country = 5 dollars. A bubble is building up.

(5) B saw that the value of land kept rising. He also wanted to own the land. So he bought the land from A for 4 dollars. The payment is by borrowing 2 dollars from C, and cancellation of his 2 dollars loan to A.

* As a result, A has got his debt cleared and he got the 2 coins. His net asset is 2 dollars.
* B owned a piece of land that is worth 4 dollars, but since he has a debt of 2 dollars with C, his net Asset is 2 dollars.
* C loaned 2 dollars to B, so his net asset is 2 dollars.

* The net asset of the country = 6 dollars; even though, the country has only one piece of land and 2 Dollars in circulation.

(6) Everybody has made money and everybody felt happy and prosperous.

(7) One day an evil wind blew, and an evil thought came to C's mind. "Hey, what if the land price stop going up, how could B repay my loan. There is only 2 dollars in circulation, and, I think after all the land that B owns is worth at most only 1 dollar, and no more."

(8) A also thought the same way.

(9) Nobody wanted to buy land anymore.

* So, in the end, A owns the 2 dollar coins, his net asset is 2 dollars.
* B owed C 2 dollars and the land he owned which he thought worth 4 dollars is now 1 dollar. So his net asset is only 1 dollar.
* C has a loan of 2 dollars to B. But it is a bad debt. Although his net asset is still 2 dollars, his Heart is palpitating.
* The net asset of the country = 3 dollars again.

(10) So, who has stolen the 3 dollars from the country ? Of course, before the bubble burst B thought his land was worth 4 dollars. Actually, right before the collapse, the net asset of the country was 6 dollars on paper. B's net asset is still 2 dollars, his heart is palpitating.

(11) B had no choice but to declare bankruptcy. C as to relinquish his 2 dollars bad debt to B, but in return he acquired the land which is worth 1 dollar now.

* A owns the 2 coins, his net asset is 2 dollars.
* B is bankrupt, his net asset is 0 dollar. ( he lost everything )
* C got no choice but end up with a land worth only 1 dollar

* The net asset of the country = 3 dollars.

************ **End of the story; BUT .... ************ ********* ******

There is however a redistribution of wealth.
A is the winner, B is the loser, C is lucky that he is spared.

A few points worth noting -

(1) When a bubble is building up, the debt of individuals to one another in a country is also building up.
(2) This story of the island is a closed system whereby there is no other country and hence no foreign debt. The worth of the asset can only be calculated using the island's own currency. Hence, there is no net loss.
(3) An over-damped system is assumed when the bubble burst, meaning the land's value did not go down to below 1 dollar.
(4) When the bubble burst, the fellow with cash is the winner. The fellows having the land or extending loan to others are the losers. The asset could shrink or in worst case, they go bankrupt.
(5) If there is another citizen D either holding a dollar or another piece of land but refrains from taking part in the game,  he will neither win nor lose. But he will see the value of his money or land go up and down like a see saw.
(6) When the bubble was in the growing phase, everybody made money.
(7) If you are smart and know that you are living in a growing bubble, it is worthwhile to borrow money (like A ) and take part in the game. But you must know when you should change everything back to cash.
(8) As in the case of land, the above phenomenon applies to stocks as well.
(9) The actual worth of land or stocks depend largely on psychology.

Life is a 5 ball Jugglery !!

Speech by Bryan Dyson (CEO of Coca Cola)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air.

You name them - work, family, health, Friends and spirit and you're keeping all of these in the Air.

You will soon or one day understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back.
But the other four Balls - Family, Health, Friends and Spirit - are made of glass. If you drop one of these; they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same.

You must understand that and strive for Balance in your life.'

Helping Bihar Flood Victims made easy

Bihar Floods ... You must have already heard about it, read about it, symphatised with the flood victims. wished you could do something but did not know how to do it effectively, easily ...

well ... here are two ways ... both simplified for you ...

First - Direct donations through your ICICI account. Today when i tried to login into my ICICI account, it automatically took em to a page where i could donate money for flood victims ... indeed ... it was definately a good gesture by ICICI to collaborate with GiveIndia.com ...  You can infact go directly to GiveIndia.com and donate for any cause of your choise ...

Second - a very unique and novel way for everybody to donate 'things/stuff' to flood victims by answering a few questions fo a quiz online .. spending one minute of their time ... and effetively donating biscuits, ropes, tarpauline, candles etc ... check out http://www.helpbihar.in/ and read press coverage of this initiative here

Blog about these .. talk about these .. spread the word and make the dinations happen ... your wee bit effort could mean a lot to someone out there in Bihar !!

YOU can make a difference !!

Earthquake - Tremors inside me !!

So in the previous blog, you see where I work. Right next to the tallest building of the world - Burj Dubai.

Now let me tell you about the thought which struck me like a lightning bolt last week when I experienced some tremors of an earthquake on Sept 10 ... while working in office ...

The thought went like this ... Tremors of Earthquake .. furniture in my 5 storey office was shaking .. imagine the 'shake' in a 50 storey building ... in a 100 storey building ... now in the 160+ storey Burj Dubai standing next to us ...

What if ... it would be shaken adn stirred to result in a fall ... and that too in our direction ... woah ...

That was enough to scare the hell out of me ...

BUT all this was pretty short livedd .. a few mili-seconds maybe ... by then the logical side of the gray matter inside the head took over the creative side and explained very logically (obviously) that all the high rise buildings were made earth-quake proof and there was no real danger of them toppling over in a normal 'high' intensity earthquake .. so we were safe and sound .. even if working in the tower itself !!

Well ... it ws my first encounter with an earth-quake (the two other ones which happened around me in this lifetime - once i was sleeping, other i was myself jumping around so did not notice the tremors - i actually felt i made them happen when others started talking about it and i kept shut :)

So .. this was about the thoughts inside me when i felt the tremors from outside ..

I cant even express the thoughts that pass through my mind when i feel the tremors of emotional earthquakes which rock my life every now and then these days ... :)

Burj Dubai and Me !!

Yeah ... thas where I am these days. The small tiny 7 floor building (group) to which the aroow is pointing to is the place where I work these days. Its the Emaar Square. My client company has office spaces here where our project team is placed. The seven storey building group is hardly visible against the 160+ floor Burj Dubai.

Everyday I see the Burj Dubai (towering at 160+ floors - still under scontruction though) when i step out of office. Its amazing how high humans have gone in building the concrete pillars (and to think of it, there are plans already underway to have a second tower higher than this and a third which will be still higher)

The purpose of Education !!

The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think - rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men.

I have never been happy with the Indian Education system ... I always felt the lack of 'thinking skills' . We learn (read 'rote'). We hardly understand. We rarely think.

I dont think something is wrong with the education system. I think, we need to enhance it. We need to bring in practical creativity and thinking training into it.

Someday ... maybe i will contribute to such measures .. :)

WHY ???

" Why must a heart break? Why must a tear drop? ....

....and why did I forget where I was going with this quote?

'Open' Hearts to People who are 'Close'

I read the following quote on the gtalk status message of a friend ...

"Who said that open and close are with opposite meanings? You will always be open to the person...who is close to you!"

I so very much agree with this ....

BUT ... then my recent experience has raised a tough question .... How Much ????

How much open can one be to closed ones ? How much open should one be to closed ones ?
i have never thought about this ever ... till recently. I was always an open book for my close ones. My best friends knew what was on my mind and what wa happening in my life. By sharing my life details with them, i got to understand myself better. I got to understand the situation better from a third person point of view. I got to understand my own mistakes which i would have not realised myself.

And then ... recently ... i lost a friend to this openness ... and am on the verge fo losing another ... in the end it amounted to me sharing too much about my life with them ... "sharing" which was the very foundation of our friendship (in my opinion) became the problem.

I no longer understand the Open and CLose quote ... bcos in my case ... The very fact that i was open ... is making my close ones move away ...

The openness bringing a close to a very beautiful friendship ... and another beautiful friendship ....

Life is strange !!

HILARIOUS DIVORCE LETTER

Got this as a forward and thought of putting it here ... a touch of humour !!

Dear Wife:
I'm writing you this letter to tell you that I'm leaving you forever. I'vebeen a good man to you for seven years and I have nothing to show for it.These last two weeks have been hell. Your boss called to tell me that youquit your job today and that was the last straw.
Last week, you came home and didn't even notice that I had a new haircut, had cooked your favourite meal and even wore a brand new pair of silkboxers. You ate in two minutes, and went straight to sleep after watchingall of your soaps. You don't tell me you love me anymore; you don't wantsex or anything that connects us as husband and wife. Either you'recheating on me or you don't love me anymore; whatever the case,
I'm gone.
Your EX-Husband

P.S. Don't try to find me. Your SISTER and I are moving away to WestVirginia together! Have a great life!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Ex-Husband -
Nothing has made my day more than receiving your letter. It's true that youand I have been married for seven years, although a good man is a far cryfrom what you've been. I watch my soaps so much because they drown outyour constant whining and griping. Too bad that doesn't work.

I DID noticewhen you got a hair cut last week, but the first thing that came to mind was"You look just like a girl!" Since my mother raised me not to say anythingif you can't say something nice, I didn't comment. And when you cooked myfavourite meal, you must have gotten me confused with MY SISTER, because Istopped eating pork seven years ago.
About those new silk boxers: I turned away from you because the $49.99price tag was still on them, and I prayed that it was a coincidence that mysister had just borrowed fifty dollars from me that morning. After all ofthis, I still loved you and felt that we could work it out. So when I hitthe lotto for ten million dollars, I quit my job and bought us two ticketsto Jamaica. But when I got home you were gone. Everything happens for areason, I guess.
I hope you have the fulfilling life you always wanted. My lawyer said thatthe letter you wrote ensures you won't get a dime from me.
So take care.
Signed,Your Ex-Wife, Rich As Hell and Free!
P.S. I don't know if I ever told you this, but my sister Carla was bornCarl. I hope that's not a problem.

Smile !!

the paradox of love

I would hate to see the one I love happy with somebody
but I surely hate it more to see the one I love unhappy with me...

life is so complicated ... feelings far more complicated ...

you can hardly hate someone you love ... not even when the person hurts you ...

the above quote is not exactly true in the use of the word 'hate' in the first part ... a person cannot hate to see the person happy for whom there is love in the heart ... it can be sad if you are not part of the happiness ... it can be painful ... it can be exruciatingly painful .. yes .. but you cant hate that situation .. your happiness is often tied to the happiness of the person you love ...

BUT ... what if you become the source of pain for the person you love ... then what do you do ?

Do you push that person away from you to protect them from yourself ... in this you will cause pain to yourself no doubt but at the same time you will also cause pain to the same person you love .. so u end up causing pain to avoid pain ...

why does life have to be so complicated ... full of paradox ...

and why is it that i am not able to think ... anything ...
